Small Roman Theatre

The Small Roman Theatre is an ancient auditorium on the eastern slope of the city hill, below the Kastel fortress. It was built in the third quarter of the 1st century BC, during the early Augustan period, from Istrian limestone. The preserved remains include a semicircular auditorium partly cut into the living rock, the orchestra area, and the foundations of the stage building. It was only identified as a Roman theatre following excavations in 1911, and today it is occasionally used for open-air performances and concerts.
