Rousanou Monastery

Rousanou Monastery

Rousanou Monastery, dedicated to Saint Barbara, is the second female monastery of Meteora and is today home to a community of nuns. It was built in the 16th century on a lower but isolated rock — reaching the entrance requires crossing two short bridges above a deep canyon, making the visit exposed to wind and heights. The monastery is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. The interior is known for its 16th-century frescoes, among which depictions of the suffering of Christian saints stand out. The bridges are relatively narrow, so the visit may be uncomfortable for visitors with a fear of heights.
