Monastery of Saint Nicholas Anapausas

Monastery of Saint Nicholas Anapausas

The Monastery of Saint Nicholas Anapausas is the smallest and oldest of the six active monasteries of Meteora. The current structure dates from the 14th century, but a smaller monastery existed on the same site as early as the 12th century. The monastery is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Although it is the smallest among the Meteora monasteries, it is particularly known for its frescoes from 1527 painted by Theophanis the Cretan, one of the most important Greek icon painters of the 16th century. The approach involves a moderate climb up stairs, less demanding than that of the Monastery of the Holy Trinity, but still requires a reasonable level of physical fitness.
