Monastery of Saint Stephen

Monastery of Saint Stephen

The Monastery of Saint Stephen (Agios Stefanos) is the only women's monastery in Meteora, where a community of nuns lives. It was built in the 14th century, and today it is the most easily accessible of all the Meteora monasteries, as the entrance is reached via a short bridge connecting the rock with a parking platform. The monastery is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. During World War II it suffered extensive damage in the bombing of 1944 and was restored after the war. Inside the monastery, icons, fresco paintings, and a small museum of ecclesiastical objects are preserved.
