Mausoleum of Emperor Ferdinand II

Mausoleum of Emperor Ferdinand II

Built between 1614 and 1638 on the orders of Emperor Ferdinand II, who was himself interred here in 1637 — the only Habsburg to have personally overseen the construction of his own tomb. The façade combines Renaissance pilasters with early Baroque elements, while the interior houses a marble sarcophagus flanked by life-size figures of angels. In the crypt below lie more than a hundred members of the Habsburg family, including his wife Maria Anna of Bavaria, whose remains were transferred here from several different churches.
