The ruins of a 6th-century monastery on a hill above the city — the city itself takes its name from it (the Greek Agios Saranta Martyron means 'Forty Holy Martyrs'). The monastery was destroyed during British bombing in World War II and further during the communist period. It is ideal to visit before sunset — the view over Saranda from above is spectacular, and the inner chamber can be explored with a flashlight.
Entry to the monastery is free of charge. Modest clothing is recommended when visiting.
