Tinguely Museum

Tinguely Museum

The Tinguely Museum is dedicated to the Swiss artist Jean Tinguely (1925–1991), renowned for his kinetic sculptures. It opened in 1996 to mark the centenary of the pharmaceutical company Roche, which founded it as a gesture of gratitude to the citizens of Basel and has funded its operations ever since. The building was designed by the Ticinese architect Mario Botta, and stands on the bank of the Rhine, beside Solitude Park. The museum holds the world's largest collection of Tinguely's works, comprising 218 sculptures, more than half of which are on permanent display. Part of the collection was donated by the artist's widow, Niki de Saint Phalle, and visitors are invited to set many of the machines in motion themselves.
