The white twin chimneys of the National Palace (also known as Palácio da Vila) are visible from every corner of Sintra's center — it is the first landmark you notice. It served as the summer residence of Portuguese kings since the Middle Ages, and the interior is a blend of styles accumulated over the centuries — Gothic, Manueline, and Mudéjar. The most lavish rooms are the Sala dos Brasões (with the coats of arms of the nobility) and the Sala dos Cisnes (with swans). From the staircase in front of the palace you get the finest view of the colorful houses of central Sintra and Mouros castle on the ridge above.
The ticket covers access to all palace rooms. Online booking in advance is recommended, as visits are time-limited and crowds are common.
