The main city square has been the center of Split's social life for centuries. Located just outside the western walls of Diocletian's Palace (the Iron Gate leads to the square), it is surrounded by historic 13th–15th century palaces in Venetian style, with the Renaissance City Hall as the central building. Today it is one of the best places to take a break and observe everyday life in Split — restaurants with terraces, cafés, ice cream shops and boutiques. Locals simply call it 'Pjaca'. Particularly lively in the late afternoon and during summer evenings.
