Blue Cave

The Blue Cave (Modra špilja) is located on the island of Biševo, a small island 5 km west of Vis. Although it is usually visited as part of the Vis experience, it is technically not on Vis itself — it is reached by boat from the port of Komiža (about 15-25 minutes) or on a tour from Split/Hvar (1.5-2h). The natural phenomenon occurs between 11am and 1pm, when sunlight enters through an underwater opening and illuminates the interior of the cave, reflecting off the white sand on the bottom — the entire interior space transforms into a fluorescent blue color. The cave was discovered in 1884, and since 1951 it has been a protected natural monument. Visits are only possible in the company of licensed boatmen (small rowing boats operated by local fishermen, not motorboats) — as the entrance to the cave is narrow (about 1.5m height above sea level). The ticket is paid together with the boat transfer. The best time to visit is early in the morning when the light is optimal and the crowds are smaller. Season: May-October (often closed in winter due to winds).
