Natural History Museum Basel

Natural History Museum Basel

The Natural History Museum Basel (Naturhistorisches Museum Basel) was founded in 1821 and has been housed since 1849 in a building in the Old Town, on Augustinergasse, designed by Basel architect Melchior Berri. The museum's collections number around 12 million objects, ranging from fossils to insects, birds, and skeletons of more than a thousand animal species. The permanent exhibition 'Mammut & Säbelzahntiger' (Mammoth and Sabre-Toothed Tiger) traces the evolution of mammals and humans through skeletons, models, and reconstructions. The exhibition 'Quagga & Dodo' displays original specimens of extinct animals and explains the role of humans in their disappearance, alongside species that are endangered today. Local flora and fauna are also on display.
