Rhine Promenade of Little Basel

Rhine Promenade of Little Basel

The Rhine riverbank in Little Basel (Kleinbasel) is a beloved urban gathering spot in summer, and according to Basel Tourism, swimming in the Rhine is the most popular summer sport in the city. Swimmers enter the river most easily below the Tinguely Museum and, carried by the current, drift along the Little Basel bank through the Old Town, all the way to near the Dreirosenbrücke bridge. They carry their belongings in a Wickelfisch, a waterproof fish-shaped bag invented in Basel. After their swim, many people dry off on the sunny riverbank. Along the river, buvettes operate throughout the season — small seasonal stalls in converted containers or wooden huts, serving coffee, drinks and snacks from spring through to autumn.
