The remains of the Red Mosque are located within the Kale (citadel) complex and represent one of the oldest preserved traces of Ottoman presence in Berat, dating from the 15th century. It got its name from the red bricks used in its construction (as opposed to the white stone typical of other mosques in Berat). Today, sections of the walls and the base of the minaret are preserved, bearing witness to the layered history of the city — Kale was for centuries an active fortification with a resident population (one of the rare examples in Europe where people still live within the walls of a medieval fortress). The Red Mosque is part of the UNESCO-protected core. Access is free as part of a visit to Kale, but note — the remains are partly in ruins and are not suitable for visitors with limited mobility.
Admission is free. Modest attire is recommended when visiting.
