The aqueduct, also known as Kamares, was built in the 16th century during the reign of Suleiman the Magnificent on the remains of an earlier Roman water supply system. It passes through the center of the modern part of the city, stands up to 25 meters tall and is approximately 300 meters long. It is one of the most recognizable landmarks of Kavala.
The aqueduct is free to view from the outside at any time. At night it is illuminated and offers an attractive sight.
