A historic botanic garden founded in 1670, one of the most important in the world. It is situated on 70 hectares in the Inverleith quarter, approximately 2 km north of the city centre. The collection contains over 13,000 plant species from all continents, arranged across themed gardens — a Chinese Garden with a pagoda, the Rock Garden, the Woodland Garden, plus the Glasshouses with tropical and desert plants. Particularly popular among locals for morning walks and picnics, it is known in autumn for the golden tones of its trees. From the top of the garden there is a remarkable view of the Edinburgh skyline with Edinburgh Castle in the distance. Entry to the garden is free, only the Glasshouses require a ticket. Ideal for couples (peaceful walks), families (open space, natural shade) and botany enthusiasts.
Entrance to the main garden is free, but a small ticket fee is charged for some special exhibitions in the Glasshouses. Open every day, opening hours vary by season.
Address: Arboretum Place, Edinburgh
