A monumental 18th-century building (1728-1771), once the largest tobacco factory in Europe and the second largest structure in Spain after the Escorial. It was Seville's main industrial building, where over 3,000 'cigarreras' — women workers who hand-rolled cigars — were employed. It served as the inspiration for the character of Carmen from Bizet's opera. Today it is the headquarters of the University of Seville — the main hall and inner courtyards can be visited. A significant example of industrial and Baroque architecture, featuring a monumental entrance, statues, and a chapel. Located right next to the Parque de María Luisa.
The building is today the seat of the University of Seville and is free to visit during working hours. Entry is possible through the main portal, and the inner courtyard is open to the public.
