The largest Catholic church in Bosnia and Herzegovina was built in the late 19th century (1884-1889) in Neo-Gothic style, modeled after Notre-Dame in Dijon. It serves as the seat of the Sarajevo Archdiocese and is one of the most recognizable monuments of the Austro-Hungarian period in the city. It represents an important symbol of the religious and cultural diversity of Sarajevo — within a 200m radius of the Cathedral stand the Orthodox Cathedral, the Old Synagogue, and the Gazi Husrev-bey Mosque, which is why the center of Sarajevo is often referred to as the 'Jerusalem of Europe'. The interior is adorned with stained glass windows and statues of saints; entry is free during opening hours.
Entrance to the cathedral is free and open to visitors throughout the day, except during religious services. Modest clothing is recommended when visiting.
