Neustift Monastery

The Augustinian Canons' monastery was founded by Bishop Hartmann in 1142, a few kilometres north of the town, and is today one of the largest monastic complexes in Tyrol. In the courtyard stands an octagonal well decorated with depictions of the seven wonders of the world, with the monastery itself painted as the eighth wonder; the complex also includes a Baroque church, a library, and the Romanesque Engelsburg chapel. The monastery has cultivated its vineyards for centuries, making a visit naturally conclude with a tasting of white wines from the Isarco Valley.
