Federal Palace

Federal Palace

The Federal Palace, seat of the Swiss parliament and government, was built by architect Hans Wilhelm Auer between 1894 and 1902 in the Neo-Renaissance style. The dome stands approximately 60 metres tall, and 95 per cent of the building materials came from Switzerland. Bern has been the federal city since 1848, making this building the political centre of the country. When parliament is not in session, free guided tours are offered through the domed hall, both chamber rooms, and the entrance hall; these last 45 to 60 minutes and must be booked via the parliament website at least three days in advance. During sessions, debates can be followed from the public gallery. The Marzili baths lie just below the palace, making it easy to combine both in a single outing.
