Sebilj

Sebilj is the most recognizable symbol of Sarajevo and the central point of Baščaršija. This wooden fountain from the Ottoman period (originally built in 1753, with its current form dating from 1891) has for centuries served as a gathering place for residents and an unmissable photo spot for visitors to the city. According to local legend, anyone who drinks water from Sebilj will return to Sarajevo. The atmosphere is particularly lively in the late afternoon when Baščaršija fills with locals and tourists — the surrounding small coffee houses offer traditional Bosnian coffee with Turkish delight. The best time for photography is early in the morning before the crowds arrive.
