Münsterfähre 'Leu'

Münsterfähre 'Leu'

The Münsterfähre, known as 'Leu', is one of four wooden river ferries linking Grossbasel (Greater Basel) and Kleinbasel (Lesser Basel). It has no engine: it is attached to a long wire cable and carried across the Rhine by the river current alone. It runs between Wettsteinbrücke and Mittlere Brücke, and from the Pfalz terrace beside the cathedral, steps lead directly down to its landing stage. Basel's first ferry was established in 1854 on the initiative of the Basler Künstlergesellschaft (Basel Artists' Society), roughly where Wettsteinbrücke stands today. Basel Tourism recommends making the crossing from Kleinbasel to Grossbasel, as this gives the finest view of the cathedral.
