Spalentor

Spalentor is one of three city gates that have survived from the Basel fortifications built around 1400. Basel.com describes it as the most magnificent of the three. A large share of the imported goods and produce arriving from Alsace once passed through this gate. It consists of a square main tower flanked on both sides by two round towers, making it visible from a great distance long before travellers reached it. On the outer facade are three 15th-century figures: the Virgin Mary and two prophets. The gate stands on Spalenvorstadt, on the edge of the Old Town.
