Victory Monument

Victory Monument

The Victory Monument, located across the bridge over the Talfer river, was erected by the fascist regime in the late 1920s following the annexation of South Tyrol to Italy, as a symbol of the Italianisation of the city and the surrounding area. For this reason, it was for decades a source of contention between the Italian and German-speaking communities. Today, its crypt houses a permanent documentary exhibition on the history of Bolzano between 1918 and 1945, which uses documents, photographs and testimonies to explain the period of two dictatorships and the context of the monument itself. A visit helps visitors understand why present-day Bolzano is a bilingual city.
