The main church of Venice and one of the most significant examples of Byzantine-Italian architecture. Built in the 11th century on the foundations of an earlier church that housed the relics of Saint Mark, brought from Alexandria in 828. The interior is covered with Byzantine mosaics spanning over 8,000 m² of surface — from ceiling to walls, dominated by golden tones. At the top is the Pala d'Oro, an altar screen of gold and precious stones, one of the most valuable examples of Byzantine art. Entry to the basilica is free, but tickets are required for the museums, the Pala d'Oro, and the loggia (the terrace with the horses). Recommendation: book a time slot online to avoid queues.
