The largest Christian church in the world and one of the most significant works of Renaissance architecture. Located in the heart of Vatican City, it is renowned for Michelangelo's dome (136 meters high — climbing to the top is possible for a panoramic view), Bernini's colonnade-lined square, and masterworks by the greatest artists — Michelangelo's Pieta, Bernini's Baldachin over the altar, and mosaics by Raphael. Entrance to the basilica is free, but there are queues — it is best to arrive before 8 a.m. or after 5 p.m. A ticket is required to climb the dome. Dress code is mandatory: covered shoulders and knees.
