Landeszeughaus

The largest preserved arsenal in the world from the 17th century — built between 1642 and 1645, it houses equipment for 28,000 soldiers that was never used in combat. Four floors are packed with armour, swords, muskets and helmets arranged in long, symmetrical rows, creating a sight unlike anything else in European museums. The building retained its original purpose until 1749, when Maria Theresa ordered the arsenal to be dissolved, but the Styrians successfully defended the collection against its transfer to Vienna.
