Roman Theatre

The remains of a Roman theatre from the 1st century AD are located at the foot of San Giusto hill, not far from the centre of Trieste. It once held several thousand spectators and represents one of the most significant preserved traces of the Roman period in the city. It was discovered in 1938 during construction works in the city centre — for centuries it had been covered by medieval houses. Today it can be seen from the street, without a ticket, and it sometimes serves as an open-air stage during summer cultural events. Ideal for history lovers visiting Trieste.
