Kalaja Castle

The fortress dominating above Berat differs from most Balkan citadels in that a living settlement still exists within its walls. Stone houses, churches, narrow streets, and the everyday life of its residents create a sense that history here is not separated from the city but is a natural part of it. From the walls, views open onto Mangalem, Gorica, the Osum river, and the surrounding hills that encircle Berat.
