Sultanahmet Mosque, built in 1616, is the only mosque in Istanbul with six minarets. The interior is adorned with more than 20,000 blue Iznik tiles, which gave it its informal name. Located directly across from Hagia Sophia, it forms the heart of the historic peninsula.
Entry is free, but the mosque is closed to tourists during the five daily prayers (approximately 90 minutes each). Shoes must be removed and head and shoulders covered — scarves are available at the entrance.
