The largest of the hundred or so Byzantine cisterns beneath Istanbul, built in the 6th century during the reign of Emperor Justinian. A forest of 336 marble columns, including those featuring the famous Medusa heads, transforms the underground cistern into one of the city's most mystical spaces.
Ticket 20€ day visit, 25€ night tour (open until 10 PM). Audio guide recommended. Best in the evening when crowds are smaller and the atmosphere is more dramatic.
