The largest church in Greece and one of the most important early Christian basilicas in the Balkans, dedicated to the patron saint of Thessaloniki, Saint Demetrius. Originally built in the 5th century on the site where the saint was martyred, it is today listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The crypts beneath the church preserve original mosaics and relics.
Entrance to the church is free, while visiting the crypts requires a small fee of around 2 EUR. The church is closed to tourists during liturgies, so it is advisable to arrive before 9:00 AM or in the afternoon.
