Bale is a small Istrian town on a limestone plateau, at 142 meters above sea level, about 13 kilometers southeast of Rovinj; the nearest beach is eight kilometers away. The medieval core consists of narrow stone streets and houses from the Venetian period, above which rises the Soardo-Bembo castle. The town is home to just over a thousand inhabitants.

Kaštel Soardo-Bembo dominates the center of Bale. It was formed by connecting two older towers with a residential wing in the 14th and 15th centuries, and the Gothic portico and coat of arms above the entrance bear witness to Venetian rule over this area. Today, local institutions are housed within its walls, and the building is viewed from the outside.
The current parish church in Bale was built in the late 19th century on the site of an early Christian basilica and was completed and consecrated in 1882. The church preserves valuable artistic and liturgical works, including a stone sarcophagus with early medieval ornamentation, a wooden crucifix, and a Renaissance polyptych. A special place in the history of Bale belongs to Blessed Julian, a 14th-century Franciscan and patron of the town, whose mortal remains are connected to this church.
