Everything you need for Bergün in one place
The Albula Railway Museum is located next to the station in Bergün and documents the construction of the Albula line, which together with the Bernina line was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2008. Between Bergün and Preda, the railway conquers a steep valley by means of spiral tunnels and viaducts, and the museum explains how this was achieved during construction in the early 20th century. Outside the entrance stands an electric locomotive of the Ge 6/6 type, known as the 'crocodile'. The museum observes a short winter closure before the start of the season, so it is advisable to check opening hours before your visit.
Kurhaus Bergün is a former grand hotel opened in 1906, at a time when it was believed that the new Albula railway line would transform Bergün into a well-known health resort. It was designed by architect Jost-Franz Huwailer-Boller, and the building retains an exceptionally valuable Art Nouveau interior. The anticipated growth in tourism never materialised, and the Kurhaus remained the only large hotel in the village. In 2012, ICOMOS named it Historic Hotel of the Year in Switzerland. It continues to operate as a hotel today, attracting visitors to the village primarily through its architecture and history.
The Reformed Church in Bergün, dedicated to Saints Peter and Florin, was built in 1188. Around 1500, it received a new choir, a nave ceiling and a tower roof. Standing against the southern nave wall is a Romanesque tower featuring single and double arched windows. The interior preserves wall paintings from around 1500, depicting scenes of the Passion of Christ and the Apostles.
In winter, the road over the Albula Pass, closed to motor traffic, is transformed into a sledging run approximately six kilometres long.
