Brunico (Italian: Brunico, German: Bruneck) is the main town of the Puster Valley, a place where history and the mountains meet in a single day. The historic core is formed by the medieval Stadtgasse with its town gates, above which stands a castle built in the 13th century by Bishop Bruno of Bressanone — the man after whom the town is named. Today the castle houses Messner Mountain Museum Ripa, dedicated to mountain peoples. Just above the town rises Kronplatz, reachable by cable car from the Reischach district, with two further mountain-themed museums at the summit. The Puster Valley is known for its potatoes and Graukäse cheese, and from Brunico you can travel by train to San Candido and Dobbiaco, or by bus into the Ahrntal and Antholz valleys.

Stadtgasse and the City Gates

Stadtgasse and the City Gates

historic street

Stadtgasse is the main street of the old town of Brunico and was once the town in its entirety: from gate to gate, burgher houses line up with stepped gables, oriels, wrought-iron window grilles and Gothic portals, while old frescoes have been preserved on some of the façades. At the western entrance stands the Ursulinentor gate, through which merchant traffic once passed. The ground floors are home to family-run shops, cafés and bakeries, making the street the centre of everyday town life to this day.

Bruneck Castle — MMM Ripa

castle

The castle on the hill above Stadtgasse was built in the mid-13th century by Bishop Bruno of Brixen, after whom the town itself is named, and was later converted by the bishops into a residence. Today it houses MMM Ripa, one of mountaineer Reinhold Messner's museums, dedicated to the mountain peoples of the world: the Sherpas, Tibetans, Hunzas and Tyroleans — their homes, beliefs and life at altitude. From the town, the castle is reached on foot via a short climb through a park, and from its walls there are views across the rooftops and towards Kronplatz.

Dietenheim Open-Air Museum of Folk Life

open-air museum

The oldest of South Tyrol's provincial open-air museums is located in Dietenheim, a few kilometres from the centre of Bruneck. Spread around the 17th-century noble estate of Mair am Hof are more than twenty historic rural houses, barns, mills and workshops, relocated here from across the province. The museum depicts the lives once led by nobles, farmers, day labourers and craftspeople, and the farm animals on the grounds make it particularly engaging for children. It is open seasonally, from spring through to autumn.
