Everything you need for Catania in one place
A cathedral dedicated to Saint Agatha, the patron saint of Catania, whose oldest parts date back to the 11th century. After the devastating earthquake of 1693, it was rebuilt in the Baroque style and is today part of the UNESCO site of the Late Baroque Towns of the Val di Noto. It houses the relics of Saint Agatha, while in front of the entrance stands the Fontana dell'Elefante, the symbol of the city.
The fountain with a black stone elephant in Piazza del Duomo is one of the symbols of Catania. The sculpture dates from the Roman period, while the current fountain was designed in the 18th century by Giovanni Battista Vaccarini. Surrounded by Baroque buildings, it serves as the main gathering place in the historic city center.
The Roman amphitheater from the 2nd century was one of the largest in Sicily and could accommodate around 15,000 spectators. Today its remains can be visited at Piazza Stesicoro, while a large part of the structure still lies beneath the modern city. It represents one of the most significant ancient sites in Catania.
Etna is one of the most active volcanoes in Europe and is located about an hour's drive from Catania.
