Zell am See – Kaprun is the twin heart of Austria's Pinzgau region, whose history stretches back to Roman times, and today stands as one of the most visited mountain resorts in the heart of the Alps. This magical corner of Austria offers a perfect combination of the crystal-clear Zeller See lake, the Kitzsteinhorn glacier where skiing is possible year-round, and idyllic Alpine scenery. Whether you come for winter sports, hiking, or simply to enjoy the peace of the Alps, this place will captivate you completely.
Everything you need for Zell am See – Kaprun in one place
An alpine lake around which the town itself grew, nestled between the Schmittenhöhe to the west and the High Tauern massif to the east. A landscaped promenade called the Esplanade runs along the shore in the town centre, offering a single vantage point from which both the summit of the Kitzsteinhorn and the rooftops of the old town core are visible. Excursion boats operate across the lake, connecting its shores and allowing visitors to combine sightseeing with a trip on the water. In summer the water is warm enough for swimming — a rarity at this altitude.
A stone tower standing 23.5 metres tall, the oldest surviving structure in the town, today housing a local history museum. The exhibition is spread across the tower's floors, so the visit takes you up through the very fabric of the building — from the ground floor to the viewing platform beneath the roof. The theme is life in the valley before tourism arrived: farming, crafts, and mountaineering. It stands in the pedestrian centre, just a few steps from the parish church.
A three-aisled columnar basilica of high and late Romanesque style from the 12th and 13th centuries, with Gothic modifications: the main apse and ribbed vaults were added in the 14th century, while the imposing west tower was added in the mid-15th century and remains a distinctive landmark of the town to this day. The elaborate western gallery bears the date 1514/1515. The western half of the crypt survives from the original Ottonian hall church of the 10th century. A fire in 1770 destroyed the Gothic vault of the central nave, and restoration work carried out in the 1970s uncovered medieval frescoes.
Two artificial lakes, Wasserfallboden and Mooserboden, nestled among the peaks above Kaprun at an altitude of around 2,040 metres.
