Zermatt is a mountain village in the canton of Valais, nestled at the foot of the Matterhorn, one of the most recognisable peaks in the Alps. The village is car-free: vehicles must be left in Täsch, from where a shuttle train reaches the centre in 12 minutes. Within the village itself, the historic Hinterdorf quarter features granaries dating from the 16th to 18th centuries, while the Matterhorn Museum and the Mountaineers' Cemetery tell the story of alpinism. A cog railway and cable cars lead to the Gornergrat and Matterhorn Glacier Paradise viewpoints. Zermatt has something to offer in both summer and winter, and not only for skiers: scenic rides, winter walking trails, and a museum.

Everything you need for Zermatt in one place
Kirchbrücke Bridge, located in the heart of the village, is one of the most famous spots in Zermatt for photographing the Matterhorn. According to the Zermatt tourist organisation, the mountain can be photographed from here at any time of day or night. In summer, photographers gather before dawn to capture the first rays of sunlight on the Matterhorn's summit — a spectacle that lasts only a few minutes. In summer, a flag-shaped cloud can also be seen forming above the peak from noon onwards.
Hinterdorf is the old quarter of Zermatt, featuring more than 30 structures built in the traditional barn and storehouse style of the Upper Valais. The barns, storehouses, stables, and old houses date from the 16th to the 18th century, with some over 500 years old. They were constructed from larch wood, with roofs of heavy stone slabs, and many stand on flat stone slabs and pillars that kept provisions safe from rodents. The Zermatt tourist office arranges guided tours in German, English, and French upon request.
The underground Matterhorn Museum traces how Zermatt evolved from a village of mountain farmers into a celebrated Alpine resort. The exhibition makes use of original houses and interiors, and among the exhibits are the original broken rope from the first ascent of the Matterhorn on 14 July 1865 and personal effects belonging to the climbers who perished. Also on display are a Neolithic stone axe and artefacts from a 16th-century mercenary, while the multimedia hall screens excerpts from the film 'Der Berg ruft', shot in Zermatt in 1937–38. The museum opened in 2006 and is accessible to families and visitors in wheelchairs.
Matterhorn Glacier Paradise, at 3,883 metres, is the highest mountain station in Europe.

Raclette du Valais AOP is a semi-hard cheese made from raw cow's milk, produced exclusively in the canton of Valais under a protected designation of origin granted in 2007. Each wheel weighs around 5 kg and is aged for a minimum of three months on red spruce boards. It is served either melted, as a raclette, or sliced thinly.
