Dobbiaco (German: Toblach) lies where the upper Puster Valley opens towards the Dolomites, at the entrance to the Landro Valley. The Dobbiaco plain marks a watershed: the Rienza flows from here towards the Adriatic, while the Drau heads to the Black Sea. With the arrival of the railway in the second half of the 19th century, the town became a summer retreat for the European elite, and the Grand Hotel from that era is today a cultural centre with a concert hall named after Gustav Mahler, who spent three summers here and composed his final works. From the village it is easy to reach Lake Dobbiaco, Lake Dürrensee, and a viewpoint over the northern faces of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo, while a trail along the route of the old Dolomite railway leads cyclists all the way to Cortina d'Ampezzo. In winter, Dobbiaco is one of the most important centres for cross-country skiing in the Dolomites.

Everything you need for Dobbiaco in one place
Gustav Mahler spent his summers from 1908 to 1910 at the Trenkerhof estate in the hamlet of Altschluderbach, near Toblach, where a small wooden hut was set up for him in the forest beside the property. Within its walls he composed 'Das Lied von der Erde', the Ninth Symphony, and the unfinished Tenth Symphony — the final works of the great composer. The hut now stands in a small wildlife park beside an inn that bears Mahler's name; visitors can view it from the outside, while the interior opens only occasionally for guided visits. A gentle themed trail dedicated to Mahler leads from the village to the hut through meadows and forest, making the walk itself part of the experience.
The Grand Hotel was opened in 1878 and was considered the most modern hotel in Europe at the time, a symbol of the era when Dobbiaco became a resort for the European elite. Since 1999, the building has served as a cultural centre: it houses a concert hall named after Gustav Mahler, and within the same building is the home of the Tre Cime Nature Park, with an exhibition about the natural landscape of the surrounding Dolomites. The venue hosts the Mahler Music Weeks and other concerts, and the nature park exhibition makes an excellent introduction before heading into the Landro Valley.
The Parish Church of St John the Baptist was built between 1764 and 1774 and is one of the finest late Baroque churches in the Pustertal valley. The vaults are adorned with frescoes by the Tyrolean Baroque painter Franz Anton Zeiller, while the Rococo altars and rich stucco work give the interior a bright, festive appearance. The tall tower is visible from across the entire valley, and the oldest Stations of the Cross in Tyrol begin at the church.
South of Dobbiaco, the road enters the Landro Valley (Höhlensteintal), which leads towards Cortina.

The Tri Zinne dairy cooperative from Dobbiaco has been processing milk from farms in the Upper Puster Valley since 1882, with particular attention given to cheese made from the milk of cows fed on hay and grass from alpine meadows. Its cheeses can be tasted and purchased at the on-site creamery showroom after a tour of the production facilities, making them the finest souvenir to bring back from Dobbiaco.
