Römer

city hall / historic square

A reconstructed Renaissance façade on the banks of the River Main, originally built in 1405 as the city hall. The central balcony with its golden eagle has been the spot from which winners are proclaimed and national events celebrated in Frankfurt since the 15th century. The complex comprises 11 joined patrician houses, and the Kaisersaal on the first floor holds 52 portraits of Holy Roman Emperors from Charlemagne to Francis II.

Kaiserdom St. Bartholomäus

cathedral / coronation church

A Gothic cathedral dating from the 14th century, it is the only church in Germany that was never a bishop's seat yet served as a coronation venue — between 1562 and 1792, all 10 Holy Roman Emperors were crowned here. The 95-metre tower dominates the old town, and the interior houses the Wahlkapelle — the chapel where the seven prince-electors cast their votes for the emperor before the ceremony itself. The German word 'Dom' does not mean cathedral but rather 'important church' — Frankfurt was never granted official episcopal status.

Main Tower Observation Deck

observation deck / panorama

The only building in Frankfurt's financial district with public access to an observation deck, at a height of 200 metres — surrounded by towers rising to 259 metres, which affords a rare view from a level between the summits of the financial centre. The glass platform offers a panorama of the River Main and the historic old quarter of Römerberg, visible 7 km away. The tower was designed by Christoph Mäckler and completed in 1999, as one of the first modern skyscrapers to be integrated into the pedestrian street network.

🍽️ Local flavors and drinks

Apfelwein

Frankfurt's traditional apple wine, served from a 'Bembel' — a grey-blue stoneware jug — and drunk from a ribbed glass with a diamond-cut pattern. It can be ordered straight, 'gespritzt mit Sauer' with a splash of sparkling mineral water, or 'gespritzt mit Süß' with a dash of lemonade.
