Granada is a historic city in Andalusia, nestled at the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountain range. It was the last capital of the Emirate of Granada, which left a strong mark on its architecture and urban development. A viewpoint in the Albaicín quarter overlooking the Alhambra with the Sierra Nevada mountain range in the background. It is especially popular in the late afternoon hours for the view of the illuminated Alhambra. It is located in the historic core of Albaicín, which is under UNESCO protection.
The Renaissance cathedral from the 16th century is one of the largest churches in Spain and was built on the site of the former main city mosque following the Christian conquest of Granada. Adjacent to it is the Royal Chapel (Capilla Real), where King Ferdinand II of Aragon and Queen Isabella I of Castile are buried. The chapel preserves their tomb, works of art, and historical objects connected to the Spanish crown.
An old Moorish hilltop quarter opposite the Alhambra, under UNESCO protection since 1994 as an extension of the Alhambra and Generalife site. A labyrinth of narrow white streets, traditional houses with inner courtyards (cármenes), and former mosques converted into churches bear witness to the legacy of Al-Andalus. The quarter has been inhabited since the Middle Ages and today is a vibrant part of Granada, with local squares, artisan shops, and tapas bars.
