Herceg Novi, situated at the entrance to the Bay of Kotor, is a city of fortresses, stone steps, and Mediterranean greenery. Its appearance was shaped by various historical periods, from the Middle Ages and Ottoman rule to Venetian and Austro-Hungarian influences, visible in its fortresses, squares, and old stone streets. The city is also known for its mimosa flowers, which have become one of its symbols. Forte Mare is a coastal fortress built directly above the shoreline and one of the most recognizable historical landmarks of Herceg Novi. Its oldest parts are linked to the founding of the city in the 14th century, while later rulers expanded and adapted it to their defensive needs. From the fortress there is an open view of the sea, the city waterfront, and the entrance to the Bay of Kotor, making a visit a combination of the city's history and one of its most beautiful panoramas.
The Old Town of Herceg Novi spreads across a hillside above the sea, with stone streets, squares, passages, and numerous steps connecting the different levels of the historic core. The Clock Tower is one of its recognizable entrances, while within the walls fortresses, churches, and Mediterranean houses from various periods alternate. Belavista, or Trg Hercega Stjepana, is one of the centers of the old town and a natural resting point during a visit.
A 16th-century Ottoman fortress situated on a hill above the old town, once used as a prison. An amphitheater within the walls now serves as a summer theater. The view from here encompasses the entire bay, Igalo, and Prevlaka.
