Motovun is a small medieval town perched on a hilltop amid the Istrian forests, whose walls and narrow cobblestone streets bear witness to a rich history spanning from Roman times to Venetian rule. It is known as the capital of truffles — precious fungi that grow in the surrounding forests along the Mirna river — and every year it attracts lovers of gastronomy and film. A medieval town perched atop a steep hill, surrounded by Venetian walls, has preserved the authentic appearance of its historic core. Narrow cobblestone streets lead to the main square, where the Church of St. Stephen and the historic communal palace are located, while the walls offer a panoramic view of the Mirna river valley and the surrounding forests known for truffles. The old town can be reached on foot along a steep cobblestone street, or by tourist transport and a short walk from the parking area below the walls.
The Venetian walls, built between the 13th and 15th centuries, completely encircle the old town and can be walked along almost their entire perimeter. The approximately 450-metre walkway offers panoramic views of the Mirna river valley and the surrounding forests known for truffles. It is particularly attractive at dusk, when the valley often fills with mist and offers one of the most beautiful views in the Istrian interior.
A Renaissance church from the early 17th century, built in the Palladian style and attributed to the circle of Andrea Palladio or his followers, dominates the main square of the old town. The bell tower from an earlier period also served as a watchtower. The interior preserves several valuable altarpiece paintings from the Venetian period.
The surroundings of Motovun, particularly the Mirna river valley, are among the most renowned wine regions of Istria, where Istrian Malvasia and Teran grapes thrive.
