Regensburg stands on the Danube, on the site of the Roman legionary camp Castra Regina, established in 179 AD, and its old town has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2006. The medieval city has remained remarkably intact: a twelfth-century stone bridge, churches, warehouses and squares all stand in a layout that has changed little over the centuries. The Old Town Hall hosted the Perpetual Diet from 1663 to 1806, making the city the seat of decision-making for the Holy Roman Empire for one hundred and forty-three years. Beneath the squares, Roman and medieval layers can still be explored today, but only as part of a guided tour.

Everything you need for Regensburg in one place
A Gothic cathedral on Domplatz, built after the fire of 1273 — construction began in 1275/76, and the spired towers were not completed until between 1859 and 1869. Inside are medieval stained-glass windows, and from the cathedral you can access the cloister, which is open only on guided tours and only from May to October. On Sundays and major religious holidays, the Regensburger Domspatzen — a boys' choir associated with the cathedral — sing here.
A bridge across the Danube, built between 1135 and 1146, for centuries the main crossing at this stretch of the river and today a pedestrian link between the old town centre and the opposite bank. From it you can see the cathedral's silhouette and a row of old rooftops, while at the town end stands the last surviving tower of the former bridge gate.
From 1663 to 1806, this building housed the Perpetual Diet, the permanent assembly of the Holy Roman Empire. The imperial hall has been preserved with its original furnishings, and the basement contains a courtroom and torture chamber. The interior can only be visited on a guided tour.
A short boiled sausage of around ten centimetres, smoked over beechwood, known in the city since the second half of the nineteenth century. Sold at butchers in the old town centre, usually in pairs, and eaten cold or briefly reheated in hot water.
