Everything you need for Siena in one place
Piazza del Campo is the main city square, shaped like a shell, and the center of the historic core of Siena. The Palio horse race is held here every year in July and August. The square is paved with red brick and divided into nine segments symbolizing the rule of the Nine. Rising from Piazza del Campo is Torre del Mangia, a medieval tower 88 m tall, which can be climbed for a panoramic view of the entire city.
A Romanesque-Gothic cathedral from the 13th century with a facade of black and white marble, one of the most magnificent in Italy. The interior is adorned with a marble floor featuring 56 inlaid scenes, the Piccolomini Chapel with early Michelangelo sculptures, and the Piccolomini Library. The complex also includes the Opa.Si con Duomo museum.
A Gothic city palace from the 14th century on the southern side of Piazza del Campo, the former seat of the Sienese municipality. The Museo Civico inside houses the frescoes by Ambrogio Lorenzetti 'Allegory of Good and Bad Government' from 1338–1340, one of the most important works of secular painting from the Middle Ages. The Sala del Mappamondo is also adorned with the monumental portrait of Guidoriccio da Fogliano.
