Vlora is the third largest city in Albania, situated in a bay on the southern coast of the Adriatic Sea, at the gateway to the Albanian Riviera. The city has a layered history stretching back to antiquity — the Greeks knew it as Aulon, and it was later occupied by the Romans, Byzantines, and Ottomans. The most significant moment in modern history occurred on November 28, 1912, when Albanian independence was proclaimed in Vlora. Today the city offers a combination of urban life — the Lungomare promenade, the beaches of Plazhi i Ri and Plazhi i Vjetër — and cultural landmarks in a well-maintained old quarter with museums and Independence Square. An ideal starting point for the Karaburun Peninsula and the island of Sazan — Albania's only national marine park, with crystal-clear waters and the ruins of a military base.
