The central city square where all the main pedestrian streets of the Lower Town converge, featuring an equestrian statue of Ban Josip Jelačić from 1866. The square serves as the starting point for tram lines and a natural gathering place for Zagreb's residents at all hours of the day. The surrounding Art Nouveau and Historicist palaces give it the distinctive appearance of a 19th-century city.
The historic core of Zagreb on Gradec hill, inhabited since the 13th century, with baroque palaces, narrow cobblestone streets, and the only preserved city gate. Kamenita vrata, dating from 1266, shelter a chapel housing an icon of the Virgin Mary which, according to legend, survived the great fire of 1731. From here, one of the most beautiful views over the rooftops of the Lower Town unfolds.
A private museum located in the baroque Kulmer Palace in the Upper Town, opened in 2010, displaying objects donated by former couples from around the world, each accompanied by a short story about an ended relationship. Every exhibit is paired with an authentic personal account from its donor, ranging from humorous to deeply emotional stories. The museum received the European Museum of the Year Award in 2011 and is today one of the most visited attractions in Zagreb.
