Sölden is a picturesque alpine resort in the heart of Austria's Ötztal valley, with a history stretching back centuries as an important hub along mountain hiking routes. Today it is recognised as one of the most popular ski resorts in Europe, with snow lasting almost year-round thanks to its high-altitude glaciers. If you are looking for the perfect combination of adrenaline on the slopes and idyllic alpine surroundings, Sölden is the place for you.
Everything you need for Sölden in one place
The summit above Sölden, at over 3,000 metres, is reached from the village itself by the two-stage Gaislachkogl gondola in around half an hour. At the top stands the BIG3 viewing platform at 3,058 metres — the only one of Sölden's three 'three-thousanders' that hikers can reach in winter without skis. Next to the upper station is ice Q, a glass-cube restaurant at 3,048 metres, also known as the filming location for the James Bond film 'Spectre'. The gondola operates in both summer and winter seasons, but is closed from early October to mid-November, during which time the summit is inaccessible.
A cinematic installation dedicated to James Bond, carved into the rock at the summit of Gaislachkogl, on the very location where 'Spectre' was filmed. The walk-through experience, taking visitors along dark corridors and through dramatic halls, lasts around an hour and a half. Entry is by timed ticket only. The installation is accessible exclusively via the Gaislachkogl gondola and follows its operating schedule: open in summer and winter, but closed from early October to mid-November.
A village church first mentioned in 1288, rebuilt in the Late Gothic style in 1521 and extended in the Baroque style in 1752. The vaults and walls are adorned with Baroque paintings by Josef Anton Puelacher, and the altar with carved figures was created between 1753 and 1758. The organ dates from 1750, and one of the bells from 1590. Adjacent to the church is a cemetery with wrought-iron crosses from the 18th and 19th centuries. The church is a listed cultural monument.
