The remains of the ancient Roman city of Serdica are preserved beneath the center of Sofia and are accessible for visits around the Serdica metro station. Paved streets, remains of a forum, early Christian basilicas, and public baths from the 2nd to 4th centuries illustrate the development of what was once an important Roman city. According to tradition, Emperor Constantine the Great referred to Serdica as his 'second Rome' due to its significance in the late Roman Empire. Besides the open archaeological complex, the underground passage also houses the Serdica 2.0 museum with a permanent collection of artifacts. Entry to the outdoor complex is free and open 24/7, making it a must-visit stop on every first trip to Sofia. In the heart of the city, Serdica forms a literal bridge between the modern Bulgarian capital and its two-thousand-year-old roots.
The open archaeological complex around Serdika metro station is free and accessible 24/7. The Serdika 2.0 Museum in the underground passage charges a ticket (~6 BGN, ~3€). Most beautiful in the morning hours or at dusk when the light is softer for photographing the ruins.
