The remains of the medieval fortress are situated at the top of the old town of Himara (Himara e Vjetër) and represent the highest point of the historical core. From the walls, one can enjoy views of the Ionian Bay, the surrounding Acroceraunian Mountains, and the coastline stretching toward Corfu — on clear days, the silhouette of the Greek island can be seen in the distance. The fortress dates from the Byzantine period (6th–7th century) and was later modified during Venetian and Ottoman rule. The old town of Himara within the walls is still partly inhabited today — along its narrow stone streets, one can see traditional stone houses of the local Greek Orthodox residents. Access is on foot via a steep ascent from modern Himara (approximately 25 minutes) or by car for part of the way.
Entrance to the fortress is free and accessible throughout the day. A visit in the morning hours is recommended due to cooler temperatures and a better view of the city and the sea.
