Ioannina is a historic city on the shores of Lake Pamvotis and one of the most fascinating cultural centers of Epirus. The heart of the city is formed by the Ioannina Castle with the Its Kale citadel, Byzantine and Ottoman heritage, museums, and views over the lake. A short boat ride leads to an inhabited island with monasteries and the story of Ali Pasha, while the center alternates between squares, traditional streets, and waterfront promenades. Ioannina is also an excellent starting point for day trips to ancient Dodona, the mountain villages of Zagori, and the Vikos Gorge.

Everything you need for Ioannina in one place
The Castro fortress is situated on a peninsula that extends into Lake Pamvotis and represents the historic core of Ioannina. The fortress dates from the Byzantine period, and during Ottoman rule it was expanded with mosques, hammams, and residences of local governors. Within the walls today stand the Ali Pasha Museum, historic buildings, and viewpoints overlooking the lake and surrounding mountains.
A small island on Lake Pamvotis, the only inhabited lake island in Greece with no motor vehicles. It is known for the monastery where Ali Pasha was killed in 1822, and several monasteries on the island preserve frescoes from the 13th–17th centuries. The island is reached by ferry from the city center, with a journey of about 10 minutes.
The Archaeological Museum of Ioannina is housed in a modern building in the city center and showcases the history of Epirus from prehistory to the Roman period. The collection includes finds from Dodona and other sites in the region, featuring bronze objects, inscriptions, jewelry, and everyday items from antiquity. The exhibition provides an overview of the development of one of the most important historical areas of northwestern Greece.
A short boat ride leads from the shore of Ioannina to the island of Nisaki, the only inhabited island on a lake in Greece.
